Leidschendam, 19 December 2017. On Thursday 14 and Friday 15 December 2017, the Defence Office of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (“STL”) organised a training for 17 lawyers recently admitted to the list of Defence Counsel established pursuant to Rule 59 of the Rules of Procedure and Evidence.
Having been welcomed by Judge Ivana Hrdličkova, President of the STL, and Mr François Roux, Head of Defence Office, the 17 Defence Counsel, from nine countries, including Lebanon, and from thirteen different Bar Associations, were able during the two days of training, to familiarise themselves with the applicable law and procedure before the STL, and with the various practical, legal and ethical challenges facing Defence Counsel before the STL.
The lawyers took part in workshops on Defence investigations and attended presentations on Lebanon, telephone evidence, the role of victims before the STL, and legal aid policy. They were also able to have discussions with Counsel assigned to represent the rights and interests of the accused in the Ayyash et al. case and with the liaison officer of the Defence Office in Lebanon. Lastly, under realistic conditions, they made submissions on procedural issues in the Antonio Cassese courtroom.
The Defence Office wishes to thank all the lawyers for their participation and enthusiasm at this training, as well as the various sections of the Registry for their assistance, and in particular the interpreters thanks to whom the training could take place in the three languages of the Tribunal, Arabic, English and French.
