Defence

The Defence - which refers to the accused individual and his counsel – are a party to the proceedings, with equal procedural rights to the Prosecutor.

The Defence Office is one of the four organs of the STL – the others being the Chambers, the Office of the Prosecutor and the Registry.. It is fully independent from the other organs.

The Defence Office does not represent, or take instructions from, any suspects or accused. An independent defence counsel represents the accused before the STL.

"If the fight against impunity is a noble commitment, guaranteeing a fair process to seek the truth is a judicial duty."

Francois Roux, head of the Defence Office
