Gaza Students Visit STL
Leidschendam – On February 23 2010, the STL received a delegation of students from different UNRWA schools in Gaza.

Vice President Judge Ralph Riachy talking to Palestinian students that were visiting STL under a UNRWA Human Rights Trip initiative program

The Students were provided with information about the mechanisms of the tribunal and were given a tour of the court facilities.

The visit, organized by UNRWA and funded by the Dutch Government, is a part of the Human Rights Trips initiative program. The program aims to inspire a culture of human rights among students in Gaza.

STL Vice-President Judge Ralph Riachy, Registrar David Tolbert and Spokeswoman Fatima El-Issawi provided the students with a briefing on the history and structure of the tribunal which the students received with great interest.

In a question and answer session that followed the briefings, the students asked about international justice and its application throughout the world and about the impact of STL on the Arabic world and Lebanon.

Speaking to the students, Judge Riachy said that, “the fact that there is no justice everyone, doesn’t mean we should stop the course of justice there where it does exist”, adding that “justice does not mean vengeance”.

Registrar Tolbert, who mentioned his work at UNRWA in Gaza, said that “tremendous steps have been made in international justice over the last 15 years but there is still much work to do”.

The STL periodically receives student delegations who have an interest in the work of the tribunal and its place in the history of international justice.
