STL President Antonio Cassese and Vice-President Ralph Riachy visit Lebanese University; the President gives a presentation to Beirut Bar Association
Beirut, 3 February 2010: On the third day of their visit to Lebanon, President Cassese and Vice-President Riachy made a courtesy visit to the Rector of the Lebanese University and to the deans of the Faculty of Law and Political Science. With a view to strengthening the links between the Tribunal and the Lebanese universities, they discussed setting up a training programme aimed at students and young lecturers in Lebanon.
President Cassese and Vice-President Riachy then went the Beirut Bar Association, where they held a brief meeting with the members of the Bar Council, the Chairman of the Bar and former chairpersons. President Cassese also gave a talk on the work of the Tribunal and the challenges it faces before an assembly of lawyers, judges, students and journalists. Following the presentation, the President engaged in a fruitful and open discussion with the assembled members, who showed a keen interest in the work of the Tribunal.
On Friday, 5 February, further to an invitation from the Rector, the President will be giving a presentation to students at St. Joseph’s University, before concluding his visit and returning to the Netherlands.
