Prosecutor Daniel A. Bellemare Meets President Michel Sleiman
Beirut, 2 December 2009: The Prosecutor of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, Daniel A. Bellemare, who arrived yesterday in Beirut for a seven-day visit, started his official visits with a meeting held today with H.E. President Michel Sleiman at the Presidential Palace.
 
Prosecutor Bellemare was accompanied by his Deputy, Mrs. Joycel F. Tabet, and other members of his Office.
 
Prosecutor Bellemare congratulated President Sleiman on the formation of the new Government of national unity and on Lebanon’s successful election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for a two-year term from 2010 to 2011.
 
Prosecutor Bellemare expressed his gratitude for Lebanon’s continued support to the Special Tribunal for Lebanon.
 
In this regard, Prosecutor Bellemare stressed the commitment of the Tribunal to pursue its mandate in total independence, fairness, objectivity and professionalism, with resolve and determination, in order to meet the expectations of the victims and the Lebanese people by establishing the truth behind the assassinations that took place in the country and ensure that justice is done. He emphasized that the process he is leading is purely evidence-driven and that the people of Lebanon deserve nothing less than an outcome that cannot be overcast with doubts about the credibility and the integrity of the justice rendered by the Tribunal.
 
Prosecutor Bellemare indicated that the investigation is making progress and is proceeding at full pace.
 
He expressed his deep appreciation for the valuable support and cooperation received by the Lebanese authorities concerned.
 
The Prosecutor concluded by reiterating his gratitude to Lebanon’s Government and the Lebanese people for their support to the Tribunal and the work of his office and by stressing that the ultimate goal of the Tribunal, beyond finding out the truth and ensuring that justice is done, is to help Lebanon and its people in their continued efforts to further promote the rule of law and in their fight against impunity.
