Employment
The Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) is an international inter-governmental organization with its own independent legal identity, and not a UN organization. The STL generally follows the common system of salaries, allowances and the other main conditions of service and is a member of the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund.
STL offers a broad range of work opportunities in the field of criminal law, international and humanitarian law, social sciences and administration. The working languages of the Tribunal are English, French and Arabic, but in some cases, knowledge of Dutch, the language of the host country, is beneficial.
The STL employs staff from all over the world. The paramount consideration in the appointment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence and integrity. Selection of staff members is made without distinction as to race, sex or religion. So far as practicable, selection is made on a competitive basis.
Fixed-term appointments at the STL are for one year, subject to extensions, and are limited to the Tribunal only. The conditions of service are governed by the STL Staff Regulations and Rules. Staff must undergo a medical exam, which must be cleared by the STL Medical Officer. Any position advertised will fall under one of the four organs of the Tribunal, namely the Office of the Registrar (OTR), the Office of the Prosecutor (OTP), the Chambers or the Defence Office.
Salaries and allowances of the STL staff are determined within the framework of the United Nations Common System.
Staff are offered a competitive salary with a yearly increment, and if entitled, a dependency allowance. Furthermore, the Tribunal offers an extensive medical and pension plan, 30 days of annual leave and 10 official holidays a year. Staff members are international civil servants and are expected to be discrete and loyal with regard to the interests of the STL.

Working Hours: Normal working hours are 09:00 to 17:30 hours, Monday to Friday, with a one-hour lunch break.

Important notice for applicants who are currently employed at another international organization seated in the Netherlands:
If you are currently a staff member of an international organization in the Netherlands, please be aware that when taking up employment at STL, if your contract at STL does not take effect immediately (i.e. the first working day) after your current contract ends, this may have consequences for your fiscal privileges and immunities. In addition, years saved up to apply for a permanent resident permit under Dutch Aliens law could be lost. Please refer to the protocol department of your international organization for more information or the ‘Protocol Guide for International Organizations’ issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Chapter 5, link: http://www.minbuza.nl/binaries/en-pdf/bz_protocol_2008.pdf). In general, note that the fiscal privileges enjoyed by staff of the STL could also differ from those enjoyed under your current employer.
