Judges of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon

The tribunal’s judges are the guarantors of a fair trial. They are all independent with extensive experience in international or Lebanese law. The judges have a responsibility to protect the rights of the accused and their role is to test and question all the evidence brought by the prosecution. They do not act as the prosecution.

The tribunal uses a mixture of international and Lebanese law. The four Lebanese judges ensure that Lebanese law is applied fairly and consistently and the seven international judges ensure that the principles of international law are applied rigorously. All judges will work to ensure that trials are conducted in accordance with the highest standards of international justice. Judges are appointed through a careful and thorough process.
